Salsolinol is a metabolic product of fermentation found in small amounts in several food sources. Primary among these sources are alcoholic beverages and chocolate. Chocolate contains only sightly less salsolinol than whiskey (chocolate 40 ug/g, whiskey 64 ug/ml). Salsolinol is thought to be the addiction principal in alcoholism and chocoholics by those who have used it. Some report that its use has led to alcohol aversion. Additionally it causes mental fog not unlike a hangover, throat discomfort, headache and weakness.
